QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT PROPOSAL ARGUMENTS (blog 13 below)

Comment here in order to ask questions about this paper.  I will give answers and classmates may have insight too.  You all can use this space to compare notes on how you are structuring your arguments.  Whenever someone comments, I get an email, so be assured that I will come here and reply as soon as reasonable possible.

Have a good weekend, next week is a short week, remember that there are many materials to look over that explain how to do this assignment, so try to just stick to the format and don't psych yourself out.  Think about the discussions we have been having in class and keep asking yourself the negative and positive effects of what you are proposing.  And if there is a cost involved, you are going to have to work harder to convince the university to enact on that proposal, right?  Write this paper with a naysayer on your shoulder so that you can anticipate how your audience might try to save themselves the work/money involved in what you propose.

Remember that the writing center will have a short week next week because of the holiday, and that they are closed during finals week.  Some of my office mates work in there, and they have lt me know it is starting to get packed.  If you want an appointment, go by there ASAP or give them a call Monday at 9:15 or so.  The number is on the syllabus.

  2. Yeah, I remember brainstorming about that in class. Hmm. What about brainstorming backwards: make a chart of the things you want to see happen/change/be built/be added, then on the other side of the chart, list the specific parts of the parking problem they would solve.

Once you have that, the problems you stated would become the bulk of your intro paragraph. Your description of what is wrong with the system.

Then, the parts that talk about what need to be changed will end up being the main topic sentences of your paragraphs. Also, if you can state them all within one sentence, or group the individual changes into one plan that you name, then that will be your thesis.

    Remember from the board Friday:
"The proposal I suggest is to xyz"
    or
"In order to solve these problems, ULL must xyz"

Try mapping it out on some notebook paper first by making the chart, then using the contents to build an outline. Then you'll just need to do those specific examples.

Anyone else having any trouble or have any suggestions? Keep posting here!

  4. Well, remember that your "problems" section really just consists of your Intro paragraph. What solution do you propose will fix these problems? Because that is the rest of the paper.

I can already imagine your audience reading these issues and saying, "here's a solution: move on campus!" But if you feel that the university has a responsibility to make that more possible somehow, what do you want the university to do to fix these issues? That will be your thesis.

You can definitely squeeze several issues into the Intro, but the meat of your paper needs to be about what you propose the university does to fix them. Check out that Organization Schemes doc, and remember that you must have a clear Proposal in this Proposal Argument. It is a thesis that you can then explain (in the body paragraphs) how it will solve the problems you detailed in the Intro paragraph.

  5. ok so we can have more then one problem? so long as we have the solution? also do we need a tulman scemia or anything like that ?

  6. Yes, you can have more than one, but you will need to be able to clearly show that your solution will directly cause each problem to be solved/improved. Work on a Toulmin Schema and bring to class, so we can play with them more in class next week to make sure that everyone's got their logical connections down.
