· If an employer is looking for a candidate with “good problem solving skills,” is she looking for common sense or analytical skills?
o In your paper, you will need to discuss definitions of common sense and analytical skills, but you will focus most of your time detailing the definition of the one you are arguing for.
**FOR WEEK 11: SCENARIOS TO TEST YOUR DEFINITIONS AGAINST:
1) A cop has a crime to solve: A man's wife has been killed, and he went to his neighbor's house to report the crime to the police. Will the cop use common sense or analytical skills to solve this crime? Which common sense or analytical skills specifically will he use? How does this correspond with your definition?
2) A boss forgets to turn in his paperwork and asks his employee to complete it for him and turn it in within the next hour. The employee is unfamiliar with what information goes into the answering of the questions, so does he use common sense or analytical skills to get this form filled out?

It really depends on the job and the person hiring, but if I had to pick one i would say analytical skills because the employee would be able pick apart a situation and give valuable insight that the boss might not see and let the boss apply common sense to their employees' findings. Usually people don't get to be in charge of others without common sense, the person in charge then manages the people under them and utilizes those peoples abilities.
ReplyDeleteOk this is what I see as your claim:
ReplyDeleteanalytical skills
And your reason:
because the employee would be able pick apart a situation and give valuable insight that the boss might not see and let the boss apply common sense to their employees' findings.
Your warrant is not very explicit, however. Perhaps because you have given a bit of a definition of analytical skills but not one of common sense.
In order for your classmates to give you quality grounds and rebuttals, they need to have a more concrete warrant to work with.
Greg Vaughn's post and his blog address:
ReplyDeleteClaim: You need analytical skills and common sense to have problem solving skills
Reason: Analytical skills means to break down a problem into smaller parts, understanding materials/instructions, and reviewed judgement rather that a quick judgement. Common sense can be defined as being able to apply your observations to the situation, life experience, and it is a natural ability.
Warrant: Analytical skills and common sense compliment each other
