WEEK TEN, TOPIC ONE

·         Does earning a Baccalaureate degree make a person intelligent?
o   In your paper, you will need to discuss the various things one is required to learn to get this degree, as well as a definition of intelligence.

**WEEK 11: SCENARIOS TO TEST YOUR DEFINITIONS AGAINST:

1)  A person has  Baccalaureate degree, but they weren't content with their field of study, so they only half heartedly worked toward their degree.  Also, they cheated on the final exam that they took right before getting the degree.  Can they still be considered intelligent?

2)  Bill Gates was a college drop out.  Do we consider him intelligent?  Why or why not?  How might this affect your criteria for your definition of intelligence?

3)  A man with a BA goes into politics and proposes going to war with another country.  He knows the war will drag out, and he knows many people will be killed during the duration of it.  Was this an intelligent decision?  Are people we admit are intelligent allowed to make unintelligent decisions from time to time?  Why or why not?  How might this affect your criteria for your definition of intelligence?

  1. Claim: Yes, earning a Baccalaureate degree is a wonderful feeling but no it does not make you intelligent.
Reason: because a lot of people just do the miniumum things in school to just get by. Warrant: There are some professionals that have many degrees but data is changing everyday and they may not know something that a student going to school may know.

  2. edesha, you must describe your definition of intelligence here so that your classmates can provide supporting evidence that proves a ba doesn't make you intelligent, and can also help you find arguments against your point so you can treat both sides in your paper. brooke fontenot in my morning class is writing on this, and you are both taking the same side. here's her blog url, maybe you ladies can compare notes: http://brookelfontenot.blogspot.com/.

  3. Claim: No, earning a Baccalaureate degree does not make a person intelligent
Reason: because intelligence can be defined as many different things such as being wise, smart, book smart, smart in a certain subject, etc.
Warrant: There are many different ways that people interpret the word "intelligent" and can not be given one definition.

  4. Claim : Living in the twenty-first century, it takes a little more than a baccalaureate degree for a person to be considered intelligent.
Reason: Intelligence is much more than just passing a few classes. In order for a person to be intelligent they must have book smarts and common sense. therefore, they should know right from wrong and be able to make logical decisions.
Warrant: A person should not be considered to be "intelligent" if they are just doing the minimal requirements to get passed their college schooling. Also, other individuals, make unwise decisions, and personally i do not think those people should have the privilege of being considered "intelligent".

  6. Does earning a Baccalaureate degree make you an intelligent person?

Claim: Earning a Baccalaureate degree does not insure a person's intelligence.

Reason: Because intelligence is learned throughout a person's lifetime in many different ways, not just in a classroom.

Warrant: Intelligence can range anywhere from common sense, book smarts, and experience. You need all of these to call yourself "intelligent." I'm majoring in Athletic Training, and in this field you have to have all of these. When growing up, I was taught that you needed common sense more than anything else, but in my major you also need a great deal of book smarts and experience as well. They all need to flow together, you need one just as must as the other.

  7. Claim: Earning a Baccalaureate doesn't ensure that a person is intelligent.
Reason: Because a person's intelligence isn't determined by their academic excellence. Their intelligence is obtained by common sense, book smart, and street smart.
Warrant: My understanding and definition of intelligence.

  8. Claim: Everybody is intelligent in their own way, regardless of a college degree.

Reason: Having a Baccalaurate degree does not make you brilliant. It is more like an achievement. Intelligence is base more on great understanding on certain material or simply a well-rounded and knowledgeable person.

Warrant: Society labels on the amount of education a person has.

  9. Mia Washington's post and blog address:

Claim: Having a Bachelor's degree does not mean you are intelligent.
Reason: Because, Intelligence is defined as the skill to acquire and apply knowledge and skills.
Warrant: Even with the knowledge it does not mean you have the skills to actually do what you have a Bachelors degree for. You need expreience for it to really be considered true intelligence.

  10. Claim: No, having a Bachelor's Degree does not mean that you are intelligent.

Reason: because there are plenty of people who do not have a bachelor degree nor attend college and are very intelligent but do not have the funds to attend college and many other reason why they can not attend college.

Warrant: there are plenty of different ways to define intelligence. Including common since and yo do not have to have a bachelors degree to have that. Everybody is intelligent in there own way. Everybody gather and distribute knowledge in their own way.

  11. 1) No i do not think that person is intelligent because they cheated on their test and did not put potential in their school efforts at all. An intelligent person puts effort and apply knowledge into what they are doing.

2)Bill gates was a drop out of school but they have a lot of intelligent people that do not go to school and they know how to use their talents wisely.

3)No, that decision was not intelligent. We see people that are very intelligent and they do not think with their minds half of the time. Like people that are intelligent and they can not afford to go to school as for people who are intelligent and waste their time in school. it might affect the criteria if it is not based on how intelligence changes its appearance.

  12. 1.) overall i do not think that they are intelligent. They basically did not do all that they had to. Plus cheating is not part of being smart at all! This is kind of one of my examples in my essay stating that basically not all bachelor degrees mean that you are intelligent!

2.)Overall i do think that Bill Clinton is considered intelligent, he was able to make great decisions for America. Intelligence do not mean that you are only smart.

3.)No i do not think that this is an intelligent decision because why would you do something and you know the outcome may be bad. And just because a person is intelligent do not mean that they are able to make dumb decisions.

  13. 1) A person has Baccalaureate degree, but they weren't content with their field of study, so they only half heartedly worked toward their degree. Also, they cheated on the final exam that they took right before getting the degree. Can they still be considered intelligent?
=I don't believe that they would be considered intelligent because why get a baccalaureate in a field you weren't truly happy with. in many ways thats just being stupid. You should go and get a job or baccalaureate that makes you happy and you can put 100% in.

    2) Bill Gates was a college drop out. Do we consider him intelligent? Why or why not? How might this affect your criteria for your definition of intelligence?
-yes we do consider him intelligent because was able to make more money than most people that did went to college. he was able to create a computer system that everyone uses everyday.

    - In a way he isn't being very intelligent at all. why go to war with a country if we have no reason too. Now are these people allowed to make unintelligent decision is ok from time to time but not all the time because if they do then how can we trust that they'll make the best choices for this country. yes this can effect my definition.

  14. 1) A person has Baccalaureate degree, but they weren't content with their field of study, so they only half heartedly worked toward their degree. Also, they cheated on the final exam that they took right before getting the degree. Can they still be considered intelligent?

-This person can still be considered intelligent, although he or she does not deserve to have earned their Baccalaureate degree in the instance of them cheating on the final exam. Working hard to earn this degree would be under the category of "book smarts." A person must apply their self in order to become more intelligent. "Common sense" also plays a part in this by having to know that it is not smart at all to cheat on the most crucial exam of your whole college career, even though they did not get caught. It says that they were not content with their field of study; maybe if they would have had more "experience" with it, it would have helped them out a lot.

    2) Bill Gates was a college drop out. Do we consider him intelligent? Why or why not? How might this affect your criteria for your definition of intelligence?

-Although a college drop out, Bill Gates is still considered an intelligent man in my book. He worked extremely hard to get what he wanted and in the end it paid out very nicely. Since 1995 he has been ranked among the world's most wealthiest people. An honor which so very much requires "true intelligence." "Common sense" is needed in his unique situation by knowing how and when to make investments. Knowing the situation at large would require "book smarts." Although, he might not have had an extreme amount of "experience," he still had to have had some to plan out his fortune.

-This man seems to be less intelligent than he might think of himself. Although, the decision if his wanting of war is now known, he drags himself down on the intelligence poll a mighty good bit. In my opinion, it was not a very intelligent decision, but his backing for it may explain why he wanted it in the first place. Yes, no one person in this world is perfect. Everyone makes and if not will eventually make at least one mistake in their life. Most "intelligent" people will make mistakes, because at that point in time it is what they thought was right. This would only effect my criteria a small bit, because the only part they would be lacking is "common sense." If they had this, they would not be considering killing millions of people for no reason.

  15. 1.) First and foremost, I dont think that a Bachelor's Degree makes someone intelligent. The fact that this person cheated on the final exam even more proves my point that one does not need to be intelligent to earn the degree.
2.) I do consider Bill Gates intelligent. He had common sense, he had book smarts, and he attained practical knowledge. The software he created is something that will be needed and used for years to come. He didnt have a piece of paper claiming he was intelligent and he is one of the most wealthiest men alive.

  16. 1. In one of my criterias, intelligence can be based on the choices we make. Right now, this person made wrong choices, but does have some knowledge about his or her degree. He or she should have done is changing their major before this problem had happen. Everybody is intelligent in their own way, but his person did not make many smart decisions.

    2. Even though Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard, he still had a succesful life. Most everybody will say he is intelligent, because of the amount of wealth and power Bill Gates have. Also, what made him succesful is pursuing for his passion for technology. About intelligence, it shows you the different levels of intelligence. For Bill Gates he has very high intelligence.

    3. It sounds like this person is achieving more of his personal goals than the well-being of others. Not everybody is perfect and the same as others. It all comes down to the choices we make. Our personal beliefs can affect our intelligence and the hoics we make. Is the man proposing for war because of a terrorist attack or for self-righteousness? Right or wrong, it seems that violence is not the answer. With intelligence, there must be other effiecient solutions to solve these problems.
